Sketch and Paint 2026

Join me in Florence in September 2023 for a fabulous two-week sketching and watercolour tour of the historic city of Florence, Italy.

Each day we will explore and capture a different part of Florence or its surroundings. Some days we might draw ‘All’aperto’ in the historic centre of the city and the next day we might visit the countryside or a small medieval town. On some days we will be accompanied by local guides.

I will tutor and encourage you in sketching and painting techniques to capture images of your Tuscan environment so that you can compose a personal diary with visual records of your trip to Florence.

Itinerary

25 September - 7 October

We will explore and sketch iconic landmarks such as the Piazza Pitti, Piazza del Duomo, and the Ponte Vecchio in the centro storico.

On alternate days we will head to quieter locations like Piazzale Michelangelo or the small hill town of Fiesole or beautiful Lucca.

Enjoy learning from a local Florentine on a guided tour of the Uffizi Galleries.

We will walk with local art historian, Elisabetta, through the streets as she regales us with the social and art history of her hometown.

We will enjoy a chauffered drive on our trip to the Tuscan countryside where we will visit Siena, Monterriggioni and San Gimignano.

Your sketches and paintings of these places will be the basis of a travel diary of your trip to Florence.

What you will learn

You will learn how to look and see as an artist, simplify and draw images of what you’re seeing. You will learn about perspective, line, tone and how to get a quick impression through sketching. 

If you’re a beginner, be assured you can learn to sketch and paint. Each participant will benefit from individual tuition as well as group tuition.

 On some days we will refine our art works in the Il Bisonte studios in the Otrano.

The Il Bisonte studio is marked on the map with the red X.

The coloured area is where we recommend you book your accommodation. This is a relatively flat and easy walk to the studio, the pale grey area is further from the centre. I recommend you do not book in the darker areas as this is far away and steep in sections.

The tuition fee covers the following expenses:

a) Meet other participants at our welcome dinner at a beautiful Italian Ristorante.

b) Learn drawing and painting from tutor Tracey Miller

c) Tour the Ufizzi Gallery with a professional tour guide.

d) Experience a day tour of the Tuscan countryside visiting medieval towns.

e) Learn about Italian art and history from art historian Elisabetta, on a walking tour in Florence

f) Lunch at Cantina Verrazzano

g) Visit the Pitti Palazzo and walk in the historic formal Boboli and Bardini gardens.

h) Make art works at the Il Bisonte studios

h) Visit the Tuscan towns of Fiesole and Lucca

i) Enjoy our farewell dinner at a Ristorante
